Are you thinking (dreaming) of having your own flock of chickens?
Do you know someone who has been poring over hatchery catalogs; spending long minutes following chicken websites; sending you all sort of ideas for chicken coops; talking about Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Sex-Link, and Sussex?
My friend Jenny has developed the perfect gift, for you or for that friend of yours, whether a chicken dreamer or long-time chicken keeper.
Feathers, Eggs, and Other Such Things…An Illustrated Planning Journal for the Devoted Chicken Keeper, is probably the most beautiful bound planner that I’ve seen.
The clear plastic overlay on the front cover will keep stray spatters away from the cover—because I am certain you will want to be using this right at your kitchen table while you are sipping coffee or hot chocolate.
The sweet drawings of flocks and chicks will have you leafing through the pages even before you have begun writing on them. And the pages—delicately decorated and full of common sense! I think my favorite page is the one that has space for all the words that come to mind when I think of chickens. If you know me, you know I love words—and here’s an entire blank page just waiting for them!
Plus, there are entire SECTIONS! Neatly titled and covered with a gingham paper pattern, the divisions are marked with a drawing of a single, delicate feather.
The section labeled, “Caring for My Flock”, for example, contains an itemized list for the brooder, blank note pages, and spots to jot down milestones like the first egg (and what to look for while waiting for that egg). There’s more: much, much more.
Even if you are an experienced chicken keeper, this is the planner for you. Keep track of egg counts, sales, feed purchases.
If you are a beginner, there are lots of suggestions and places to record your thoughts. If you have followed Jenny’s progress as a chicken keeper on www.blackfoxhomestead.com, you’ll know she is a devoted chicken-mother, and worries about her girls. There are spots in this lovely planner where you can address those worries—even a place to note how you feel about having chickens!
This spiral bound notebook is just the right size to stick in the pocket of your barn jacket to take with you to the coop, and yet beautiful enough to display on a coffee table.
If you’re looking for a gift for a budding, dreaming chicken keeper—and the holidays are fast approaching—I heartily recommend Feathers, Eggs and Other Such Things…beautifully designed and produced and available through Jenny’s Etsy Shop, “Scratchy Pixel”.
While you are there, be sure to look at all the other items she has patiently and neatly drawn and designed. Many of the items you will be able to download right away.
Disclaimer: Yes, I was provided a copy of Feathers, Eggs, and Other Such Things…An Illustrated Planning Journal for the Devoted Chicken Keeper, but the comments are entirely my own.

Awesome, your chickens will thank you for that! Our nerohbgis has chickens as well, and their coop has a brick propping up there door. A raccoon got one. so good thing for the latch!
I’d love to have this journal, if only for the beautiful illustrations!
