Every flock needs a super star, right?
Well, Betty the chicken certainly thinks so.
It seems a lot of my chicken pictures include our Barred Rock named Betty. Why is that you may wonder. The answer is simple. Betty likes to be in the spotlight! When she sees that I have my phone or camera, she proudly puffs up and strikes a pose for me.
On this particular day, the sun rays and wind were lined up just right for her to have a glamour shot.
I have also caught her taking on the leadership role in our backyard flock.
Perched as if on a stage, she gave a speech that went something like this, “First we are going to eat, then take a dust bath, scratch around for a snack, then we will lay some eggs”.
When I added a metal rooster (giggle) to the chicken yard, Betty strutted over to see what was going on.
She is one of the first to check out anything new. Like the first time I fed them a banana. After much inspection, she helped devour it.
Betty definitely has a leadership role among the other ladies in our backyard flock. When we introduced her to our existing chickens last year, she quickly let us know who she was. In our four years of chicken keeping, Betty is the only hen who continuously ‘flew the coop’. That was my first article about Betty, titled A Chicken Full of Spunk.
She has since been the star of many instagram photos, posing as if she’s at a red carpet event.
I must say observing Betty has been a treat. After all, every flock needs a super star, right?
