Two Easter Egger chickens and their beautiful blue eggs have recently been putting smiles on our faces!
We have come along way since we first embarked on our chicken raising venture, when we chose our first flock of chickens ‘blindly’, so to speak. Because it was recommended to us, our first flock was all golden comets (and one accidental Buff Orpington). Pretty chickens and wonderful egg layers, but…they all looked the same and they all laid brown eggs.
We decided that we wanted a variety…both in the flock and in the eggs. Then out of the blue (pun intended), Hubby said, “I’d like to have some blue eggs one day”. Well, that one day happened a couple of weeks ago. Our youngest daughter collected the first one, and when she showed it to me, I jumped up and down and starting squealing with excitement…it was so cute! It was a grand day at LL Farm.
Slowly, I have been able to contain my child-like excitement, although I still smile EVERY DAY when I see those beautiful blue eggs! Yes, every day we collect one (and sometimes 2) blue eggs from our two Easter Egger chickens. In the picture above, she is in the nesting box, ready to deliver her blue gift for the day.
So, what is an Easter Egger chicken, you may be asking. You know you want one (or two)! Easter Eggers are a mixed breed chicken, making each chicken similar, yet different in their looks (as you can see in the picture above).
They are a popular pick, not only for their egg color but also because they are docile. Easter Eggers are both cold and heat-hardy, making them a great addition to any flock. The egg colors can range from shades of blue, green, and sometimes pink…hence their name, Easter Egger.
