Fall is in the air Earlier this week, we had a frost warning here in New Hampshire. Thankfully, the mercury stayed above 40 degrees and both the garden and our hens were unfazed. While it is a bit early for us to be heeding frost warnings, I know that fall is only weeks away. Leaves are beginning to turn and and the time has come for us to begin preparing the farm for the pending season.
With fall settling in, it becomes more difficult to ignore that winter won’t be far behind. Our New England winter is long and anything that makes our daily chores a little easier is a welcome sight. So, when I saw these chicken keeping DIY projects in my Facebook newsfeed, I knew that both of them would help to make tending our flock during the winter that much easier.
With a continuous chicken feeder and grit dispenser in each coop, we could reduce the daily time spent refilling feeders and containers of grit. Both of the projects included simple step by step instructions and used easily accessible building supplies. In fact, one of them uses repurposed materials that might be found in your recycling bin.
I’m sure that I am not alone in looking for ways to ensure that our hens are well cared for every day while minimizing the amount of time spent on daily chores, so I thought that I would share both projects with you.
