A Mason jar and a chicken wire stencil can make a charming lantern for your porch or patio. With just a few craft items you can make outdoor lantern to be decorative during the day and sparkle in the evening.
I bought a case of purple mason jars in the spring since Ball Jars had a special edition sale for them. I love all things purple so they were perfect for me. I’ve created several things with them like a vase with a flower frog attachment, a fairy house (more about that in a future post on my blog) and now my lanterns for my patio. Of course, I not only love purple, but I also love chickens so this combination was just right for me and my patio.
Here are the supplies I used:
- 3 purple quart-sized Mason jars (or another color of your choice)
- Silver Metallic craft paint and Glo-It paint additive (the Glo-It gives a luminescence to it at night)
- Craft paint sealer or just use outdoor craft paint
- A chicken wire stencil
- A round sponge pouncer
- Regular sponge brush
- A Mason jar hanging converter kit
- Battery-operated twinkle lights
- Blue paint tape
Mix up your Metallic craft paint and Glo-It paint (you can use any color craft paint and/or jar you like to match your porch or patio décor. Tape your chicken-wire stencil on the first side of your jar (by the way you can paint right on top of the raised logo and measure marks). Take your round pouncer sponge and saturate it in the metallic/Glo-it paint then get as much paint out of it as you can before using it on your jar. You want to get
a shimmery effect not full coverage of paint. As it dries, which is pretty quick, move your stencil to each side matching up the chicken wire stencil to the previous side. Once the paint is completely dry, use your regular sponge brush to apply sealer on top of the paint for outdoor use.
When this is dry, you are ready to convert the jar with a hanger. You can find these hangers at any craft star in the Mason jar section. They easily attach to the top of the jar. Finally, open the jar and place the battery-operated twinkle lights inside with the battery pack in the middle of the twinkle light cord for easy access.
This is such an easy and cute way to convert a mason jar to a patio lantern. I hung three across my wisteria arbor but you could sit them on the porch or patio, nestle them in potted plants or place them on a patio table for a pretty color (for day) or sparkle(for evening) splash. A Mason jar and chicken wire stencil, you can’t beat that for a delightful patio perk-up for your outdoor summer enjoyment.

I love your craft section that you all do…..last year you gave the tote bag made out of a chicken feed bag and I made a couple for gifts out of scratch grain bags and they were a great hit….
